Orthotics

Foot care is one of the fastest growing, yet most neglected, areas of healthcare today. The incidence of foot problems increases with age, making this issue timely and important to baby boomers and especially those who suffer from diabetes. As well, the popularity of high heels has increased the incidence of foot pain among women as they suffer from four times as many foot problems as men. When you think of orthotic therapy, you might think of plaster cast molding. And you
would be correct. But orthotic therapy (custom inserts worn in shoes) is in the midst of major technological advancement.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are customized insoles worn in any type of shoe and they correct the way you walk. If you are walking incorrectly, your entire body can be out of alignment causing all types of problems including foot, ankle, leg, hip, and lower back pain. A 5-minute gait and pressure analysis test will tell you if you are a candidate for orthotics. Orthotics are covered by most insurance plans because insurance companies know the value of orthotic therapy in the prevention and treatment of many conditions that can lead to short-term or even long-term disability claims.

Foot problems may contribute to stress or pain in other parts of your body, even if your feet don't.

How is MetaScan Different?

Metascan™, a computerized gait and pressure analysis system from Footmaxx, is an innovative diagnostic tool that analyzes foot function when you stand, walk or run across a mat. The result is a computerized gait analysis report that provides a thorough clinical assessment to help us prescribe custom orthotics – literally within minutes. The Metascan system has several uses both for the treatment and prevention of foot problems, especially among diabetics who sometimes can avoid lower extremity amputations with annual screening and gait analysis. As well, abnormal foot function can lead to ankle, leg, knee, hip and even lower back problems.

Do You Need Orthotics?

Take this self test to see if you need custom-made orthotics.

  1. Do you have obvious foot problems (bunions, corns, flat feet, etc.)?
  2. Do you have pain while standing, walking or running?
  3. Have you had a prior injury to your foot/ankle, knee, back or neck?
  4. Is one of your legs shorter than the other?
  5. Do you stand or walk on hard surfaces for more than 4 hours daily?
  6. Do your feet "toe out" when you're walking?
  7. Do your shoe heels wear unevenly?
  8. Do you have knock knees or bow legs?
  9. Do you participate regularly in any physical sport (basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, etc.)?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions,
custom-made orthotics may help you!

Dr. Martin Asks some important questions of interest to Moncton residents - Chiropractor Moncton Dr. Martin Asks...

How come medical doctors don't recommend chiropractic?
That's changing. Years of prejudice and bias are giving way to research showing the benefits of chiropractic care. As more and more Moncton folks seek alternatives to drugs and surgery, more and more medical practitioners are referring their patients to chiropractors.
Could a chiropractor put an end to bedwetting?
If bladder control seems elusive, consider chiropractic. If spinal bones are interfering with nerves that control your child's bladder, plastic sheets, alarms and other methods simply add to the embarrassment. Moncton parents are often amazed (and relieved) that chiropractic can be so helpful. Learn more.
